Adult orthodontics

Orthodontic planning is shaped by aligning bite mechanics with aesthetic goals from the start.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch that corrects positional irregularities of teeth and jaw bones. Treatment is carried out via fixed metal or ceramic brackets, lingual (behind-the-teeth) bracket systems or clear aligners. Each option has its own indication range, comfort level and visibility characteristics.

At Bergedent, adult orthodontics is approached from a multidisciplinary treatment coordination perspective: space opening or closing before implants, minor correction before veneers, or occlusal reorganisation related to jaw joint complaints — in such scenarios, orthodontics forms part of the treatment plan.

Treatment Options

Clear Aligners

Removable and virtually invisible. Effective in mild-to-moderate crowding and open bite cases.

Ceramic Brackets

Tooth-coloured fixed braces. Reduces metallic appearance while retaining the fixed treatment advantage.

Metal Brackets

Classic fixed orthodontics. Reliable across all malocclusion groups; cost-effective option.

Retention Retainer

Fixed or removable retainer to maintain tooth position after treatment.

Orthodontic Treatment Process

01

Diagnosis & Analysis

Intraoral photographs, panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiography, model taking and bite analysis are performed.

02

Treatment Plan

Malocclusion type, treatment duration and method are determined. Need for tooth extraction is evaluated.

03

Active Treatment

Brackets/aligners are applied; movement is managed with control sessions every 4–8 weeks.

04

Retention

A retainer is fitted when active treatment is completed. Indefinite retention is recommended for long-term stable results.

Orthodontic Indications

  • Dental crowding (mild-moderate-severe)
  • Diastema (unwanted gaps between teeth)
  • Deep and open bite
  • Crossbite — anterior and posterior
  • Space management before implants
  • Adult occlusal rehabilitation

Frequently Asked Questions

Is orthodontics possible in adults?

Yes. As long as bone density and gum health are sufficient, orthodontic treatment in adults follows similar mechanisms to children. Treatment duration may be slightly longer than in children.

Do clear aligners work for every case?

They give good results in mild-to-moderate crowding and certain open bite cases. Severe skeletal problems, vertical dimension disorders and complex rotations may require fixed braces or surgical coordination.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

It varies from an average of 12–28 months depending on case complexity. Mild cases can be completed in 8–10 months.

What happens after treatment is completed?

Retainer use is mandatory. A fixed lingual retainer is recommended for the upper and lower anterior group; a removable night retainer may also be offered as an option.
